Ah bugger, should be easy enough once your guru returns, just needs the correct secret handshake that windows is wanting. its all still there, its just making it accessible.

indeed microsoft have 'special' ways around things...only seems to make sense once you know the answer, they remind me of cryptic ridlers...

Sused it.....

with the help of Kombitz web site...

simply follow these's simple stages

1.Open an elevated command prompt.
2.Type the following to create a boot loader for Windows XP.
bcdedit /create {ntldr} /d "Windows XP"
3.Type the following to set the device to where Windows XP is installed. I used D: in this example. Replace it with the drive letter of your XP installation.
bcdedit /set {ntldr} device partition=D:
4.Type the following to set the path.
bcdedit /set {ntldr} path \ntldr
5.Type the following to add this boot loader to the boot up screen.
bcdedit /displayorder {ntldr} /addlast
6.Reboot the computer.

i'm now a happy Bunny.

xp and windows 7 (windows 7 is faster BTW)

Windows7 is a great OS, weirdit didn't automagically set up dual boot. It does when loaded on a vista installation

Richie, I wish my neighbours were as savvy as you.

I'm the local IT guru for next door, and was summonsed to have a look at the virus they've contracted yesterday. 37 trojans and 13 viruses it said. "DOWNLOAD FIXEZ NOW?" it asked?

I was at work when they emailed. I said, unplug the "internet" cable, and wait till I come home.

2 days later I went round. They hadn't touched it since. Bless.

Turns out they'd had a targetted banner ad that was actually just IE pretending to be Explorer - it was fairly authentic I'll give you that but still.....

Installed SpyBot S&D, immunized, ran a check and left.

Just before I did, it says

"An update is available" - for Vista SP2. I says "Yes". It downloads 546 MB and then says.......

"This Service Pack could make your system unstable as its drivers are not compatible with your hardware" (or some similar guff) "Do you wish to continue"?

Ahhhhhhhhhhhnnnd relax.

Me? I likes Ubuntu. Give it a shot, you'll never look back.
