Sounds like the dust seals are not slipping across the piston.

Are you sure the piston is healthy? A little bump could make it pick the dust seal up.

Myself and a local mechanic (with 100k miles + of experience), found that on tokicos like ours there was no harm done by leaving the dust seals out and packing the recesses with red rubber grease...

Had thought about trying this. The dust seals *seem* to be fine, and the pistons are absolutely fine apart from a tiny bit of corrosion on the very lip of it, which never touches the seals. I'll take the dust ones out tomorrow and see how it goes.

Pretty sure. Tomorrow I'm going to hammer an old screwdriver into an angled scraper to make certain, but I spent ages cleaning the old white crud out of them the first time I stripped them. If they're completely clear I'll leave the dust seals out and pack with red rubber grease and see how I get on.
