Well I thought I'd fixed this but both times I have taken it out I get the same problem. Difference is though that if I put the choke full on it idles at 3k rpm and after warming a bit it'll allow me to ride. It's rough though for a bit then I can take the choke off and it behaves normally. I still think it's not as responses as it should be after being fully warm but it's ok. Same again tonight though, low choke and open the throttle and it dies, full choke and I can pull away, it runs rough for about 5 mins then choke off and it's kinda fine???? Any ideas of anything else it could be?

This does sound like water in the fuel. Where my bike sat it took in more and more water and eventually died, but initially I was getting symptoms similar to yours.

Take the tank off and remove the fuel tap and drain out whats in there. See my thread here for details and pictures. http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=142806
It'll only take you about half an hour to do this and will at least eliminate it if its not that.

Cheers Taipan - took me about 2 and half hours but I cleaned the tank out, drained the carbs (again), found that the water drain pipe from the filler gap was blocked with carp at the T-joint so cleaned all that out, refilled with v power and then gave the front CCT a few twists for good measure. It now goes like a scalded cat!

The fuel at the top was fine but the further down the tank I drained (turned upside down and shook) the more murky it got and the crud at the bottom was like sludge at the bottom of the Mersey.

Seems to be running fine now though and very responsive, easily the best it's been since i got it. I'll give it another go tomorrow with a cold start and see how it behaves

That's good news. You could chuck some meths in the tank as well as that will help dissipate any water that's left in there.
