It's a 12V system so you can only get 12V(ish) applied to any electric component. The sidelights are 12V bulbs so you've got no need to worry.

Take out the indicator bulbs and see if the sidelights still flash. If the switch affects it, the fault must be post-switch but might be before or after the indicator bulb.

Barwel, I have 2x55/60W H4 lights up front, just like everyone else with a faired pointy. Yours might be slightly higher at 65W, but its not a massive difference - nothing that heated grips or a discharged battery wouldn't draw.

OK, thanks ..... will try that ....

I disconnected each indicator in turn this morning, and it made no difference .... same story.

does it matter if the indicator switch is set left or right? also does the hazard switch have the same effect?

Does the polarity of the indicator wiring matter at point of bulb ??

Not checked new indicator (only one) .. but is that a possibility ?? ........ I'm guessing not, as when I removed it no change !!

not unless its an LED indicator, in which case it just won't light up. Normal bulbs will work either way.

Great ..... one less thing to look at ....

Whats your hunch mate ??!!!

Be much easier to check if the sidelights weren't wired to the ignition ...... because I could narrow it down to the alarm, or not ....

i'm just poring over a circuit diagram, looking for obvious points where it could short. It's might be something to do with the feed from the ignition, cos this feeds the sidelights and the indicator relay.

Or:

If they've spliced an alarm connection from a live feed (probably from the alarm unit) to some point between the indicators and the indicator switch (two splices, in fact - one for each indicator side) then this might track backwards through the indicator switch and the relay and make the line from the ignition switch live - and this would light up your sidelights, and also your licence plate light, if you still have that fitted.

I'm gonna check if my bike does this too.

edit: no it doesn't. But my alarm might be wired differently to yours.

Nice one - I owe you a drink !!

The point is it didn't do this before I fiddled with the indicators ...... maybe I've dislodged, or chaffed a wire !!!

Still got wiring for rear plate light ..... but removed bulb ....

I can't see how doing stuff to the indicators would affect things. You haven't changed anything near the indicator relay, have you?
