if you jailbrake it does this mean you don't have to use itunes, and that you can set ringtones, from your tunes?

You dont need to jailbreak your iphone to create a custom ringtone.. basically create an AAC format file copy of the tune that you want. Then make a copy of it. Rename it so the extension is M4R and then off the file menu in itunes add the file back to your library again.

At the moment this I have found only seems to work if the piece of music that you are setting as a ringtone isnt one you have purchased via the itune store though.

If you google for it, theres better instructions on the web that those I have written above. But the process worked for me...

You cant set a custom message alert tone though unless you have jailbroken your phone...

hey...well timed thread. I received my new iphone 3gs on Monday (loving the motorcycle ringtone that comes pre-installed). Anyway, so I see that if I go to settings, and wanna set up tethering, it asks me to contact orange (where no doubt I will be charged more).
If I jailbreak my phone will I be able to tether to my hearts content for free or will orange find out?

Also, does jailbreaking void iphone warranties, and is there a way of 'unjailbreaking' so to speak, perhaps by restoring to factory setting?

also I did exactly this, and itunes recognised it as a ringtone. Dragged and dropped into my iphone..'synced' and all that, but it just does not wanna show up on my ringtone screen in settings when i use my iphone!! Any ideas?

thanks

I believe you just "restore" it via Itunes and it takes the jailbreak off.

I've got a ringtone that I want to make that does just this. It shows in Itunes as a ringtone but the phone doesnt see it. I suspect some kind of copy protection malarky going on... I'll keep chipping away at it and see if I can sort it out, if I do I will post up on here what I did, but dont hold your breath that I sort it out...

No, i'd say those who dont have more money than sense are using non iphone phones lol, and want a phone they can actually multitask on properly.

The only thing the iphone is, is cool, and that it does do well, for a huge premium.

thanks...i'll try a few others and see if the same thing happens, as it was the first and only ringtone I tried.

Any ideas on the tethering though? Perhaps networks just aren't banking on the fact that I can jailbreak and tether away, or are they?!

Any cool advantages to jailbreaking (free apps I believe was mentioned)? Downsides (other than that dodgy program that gives people control over your phone)?!

Is it under 30 seconds long? As iphone wont recognise anything longer.

Well I think it all depends on what you want from a phone, and how you gel with the interface. I had an ipod touch, and just got sooo used to it as my music player. The iphone (which I got in 32gb cos I have loadsa music and wouldn't have bothered otherwise) has combo'd phone + music. I know others store and play music, but when youve ipodding for so long, and you have your itunes all set up in genres, etc, it was hard to say no to the iphone.

Aand I think people who aren't too big on the iphones haven't experienced some of the reaally cool apps that are available. Ive messed about on a few blackberries and they're just sooo boring (though Im sure they're good for the businessy sort)! Plus the iphone has a stinking 3.2megapixel camera, but pfft, don't really matter - not my thing. Ipod + phone = less baggage in my pocket, and less charger hassle!
