The Bank of Mum and Dad was never open in my case. I simply learned to live within my means and learned to do things for myself rather than paying others to do them for me.

I'd meant to post this earlier. I have a mate at work who also shows no mechanical sympathy gets his cars fixed when theres a problem & servicing once in a blue moon.

He's got a little Punto as his runaround and work car. Never looks under the bonnet ever.

Well his oil got so contaminated that the oil filter corroded from the INSIDE and he only noticed when the oil light came on on the way home.

His mechanic said there was a tablespoon of oil left in the sump. Lucky the Punto didn't seize.

He doesn't seem to equate that if he just got his car serviced once a year, then they'd last a bit longer. His Corsa bit the dust due to a lack of TLC

Just changed the oil on both cars in the last month, which is an annual routine, as neither do much milage. Which reminded me of this thread

Well just been to collect his van and tow it back. I advised him to keep the engine running to ensure his brakes are effective whilst he is on a length of rope behind me. Sounds like a bloody tank, god knows when he last did an oil change (if ever).

Well only one snapped rope and it is now outside the house. Overalls about to be donned.

So it is up on the axle stands, disconnect drive shafts, gear level linkages, reversing light, speedo and clutch cable and whip the offending box off.

Fortunately I have a family friend who owns one of the biggest breakers in the country so a replacement box shouldn't be a problem. Once I have identified the model required I need to somehow get past his call handling people, and talk to either him or his wife and I should have a new (to him) box delivered.

Will he appreciate my efforts. I am almost 50, yes hard to believe. What the hell am I doing lying under other peoples vehicles on cold damp floors.

Yes I know it is the second worst sound to hear. "DAD", still not as bad as the worst. my youngest daughter on the scrounge with her "daaaaddiiiiiieeeeeeee" said in such a way that she makes me feel a right old perv as she twists me round her little finger.

These are the very things that make you a Dad, the reason why us kids love our parents. Tim, your kids are very lucky and I hope that you do feel appreciated. If not, just tell them that they are not too old for a clip around the ear!
