Really non-specific unfortunately, very small and quick, under the seat both sides. No bare wiring was visible. It almost looked like something was earthing/arcing onto the bit of metal that the seat bolts on to. If that makes sense? (I don't know anything about bikes).

Sounds the normal place for an SV. Even though I knew they went there, and watched out for it. It still got me.

well at least it's good enough that you don't need to look elsewhere like the headstock.
Just get a roll of insulation tape & use it up on all the wiring under the seat.

Thanks everyone ) It'll be my own fault I'm sure for leaving it out in the rain. That'll teach me.

Rain is not usualy the problem, the wiring issue mainly concerned early curvey SVs and not the later models as suzuki knew the problem after that.
My SV has lots of wiring exposed at the front and no issues at all.

Na not your/rains fault as someone said the baring of those wires is quite a common fault. Over time and miles they wear out the rubber sleave and once the wire is bare it takes the path of least resistance and in this case that has now become your seat bolts/subframe.
Anyway its a quick fix, whip off the seat and maybe the rear plastics to get a better view, inspect all that wiring as the fault may be obvious. If you cant see it then, then sacrifice another fuse be eagle eyed and wait for it to short again. (May mean rocking the bike about while its running)anyway once you've located the area its shorting from just wrap some insulation tape around the offending wire add plenty to avoid it happening again. Then hopefully pal its problem solved.

Cheers again everyone for your advice and assistance. Turns out that the reg/rec is not working correctly, something about the causing 16V instead of 12V to go to the battery, resulting in it being 'cooked'. Oh dear. It's gonna cost about £170 at a garage here in Milton Keynes, one I use all the time and they're usually very reasonable. Dang! I hope my colleague at work still wants to buy it /

£170 seems steep. £40 for a battery, £40 for a used reg rec and an hour to fit it.
