Not as far as i know, but your side stand switch will kinda activate the same reaction if its down and you put it in gear.
Check all the stupid stuff first before changing parts.

would it affect the bike starting IF the side stand switch is faulty even in neutral?

un likely but bypassing it may rule that out.
Have you checked the condition of the battery first and foremost as a shagged battery may be the cause

Yes, i think it would as all the bits have to complete (or open) a circuit i think.
Is the kill switch in the correct position ?
The fact that its not turning over indicates to me that the 'circuit' is not being made, wether thats the ignition, kill switch, fuse, side stand switch or whatever.
