You don't have to have a working clutch either. What is a legal requirement for MOT or not, does not mean that it is not a legal requirement for road use and a working speedo is required for legal road use when the vehicle was granted type approval with one.

how would the police know that your speedo isnt working, unless they were driving alongside and peered out the car window and leaned right into the bike front to look.....

Long story short, any vehicle used after October 1937 must have a speedo. There are other minor exemptions but none that relate to motorcycles, certainly not of the SV age and size. It's the con and use regulations which are nothing to do with MoT tests.

You don't need a number plate light for an MOT either but that won't stop it being illegal to ride without...it's all to do with some vehicle regulations that I read about on here once I think...
