I think the smell of petrol after twenty minutes running is the issue.Does it smell of neat petrol like its running out of the tank or that running rich partly burnt petrol?

Right, plugs changed for new and leads checked and cleaned up plungers out and put back choke opens and closes ok, all good.

Bike now idles great but backfires when throttle opened, does this until it dies.

Also just noticed the oil and petrol light flickering in time with engine. This stops when throttle opened??

Is my bike dying a slow painfull death??

As you've been buggering about with the fuel and vacum lines, make sure that none of the lines are perished

I had a bike where it would run fine at high revs, but when it returned to idle it died.

Perished fuel line was letting in air at low revs, causing fuel starvation. At high revs it was sucking hard enough to overcome this

Bike ran rough at low revs because of the air in the fuel

I wouldnt expect to see the oil light on at all with the engine running unless the idle speed was far too low.Backfiring when opening throttle could be an intake air leak, and as you have fiddled with the piping and disturbed the carbs and airbox Id re check all that. What did the plugs you took out look like?Lean/rich,and were they both the same?

Lights on constantly now while idleing, they go out when throttle opened. I hate bikes.

Just a thought, but is your air filter OK?Not clogged up,and there is a bit of insulation matting glued to the underside of the tank.Make sure it isnt loose and falling across the air intake when the tank is in place.

The lights may come on if really slow idle.

When you lifted the tank to service it did you trap any pipes or possibly get water into the tank which has got into the carbs?
