The photos look horrific, there is one of a woman holding her husband's hand as he dies in the street.

I spend 5 weeks in New Zealand a few years ago and experienced a minor earthquake while I was there. It was an eerie feeling. New Zealand Cricket have offices near the Cathedral in the financial district and they happily took me on for a few weeks work placement and made me feel very welcome. Their offices are wrecked but thankfully no casualties.

The Kiwis are a friendly bunch generally and Christchurch is a beautiful city, it's so sad to see it torn apart.

It is terriable though I'm very thankful that my god parents live Auckland so out of the quake zone.

As Soulkiss pointed out we will be long dead before the Earth is destroyed if your concered about the fact we have about 450 million years before the sun expands and destroys the Earth.

I don't think I'd worry about the Christchurch quake presaging the end of the world. ENZED is also called the 'Shakey Isles' as we are so prone to earthqaukes, due to our situation wrt to the tectonic plates.

Christchurch had a big quake last year, and has been said only avoided casualties due to it occurring in the early morning hours. This one was not as severe (6.3), but not as deep (5K), and at lunch time.

Napier, in the North Island, was pretty well flattened back in the 1930s, and we've had regular 'events' since recorded history. We've also got dormant volcanoes in our major city, and fault lines running through our capital city.

I guess you could say that we're used to living with the prospect of 'the big one', but it's still awful to see so many familiar landmarks destroyed, and to hear of people you know of who haven't survived. Bugger!

If we didnt have quakes and volcanoes we would all be dead anyway and Earth would look like Mars

Although that is a fairly valid point, something somewhere makes you wonder if these natural disasters and civil wars are the world's way of attempting to sort out the issue. I don't think much of the we need to stop having kids thing, we seem to enjoy killing off our own race anyway so I reckon it all balances out.

65 people?

65 people die every 45 minutes in the USA as a direct result of smoking

That's 1100 a day

1100 yesterday

1100 today

1100 tomorrow

and the next day

and the next...

The only reason we hear about things like the earthquake is because it makes good news stories, and the airtime is nowhere near proportional to the threat. These days we hear about everything that happens anywhere in the world, so it appears that events are happening more often, when in fact they were happening before, we're only hearing about it now...

I only came back in December and we spent time in Christchurch, our hotel just behind the Cathedral. To see so much destruction is tragic. It is only a small city in comparison with what we have so the devastation is far greater. My thoughts are with those out there who are suffering and I hope that their strong spirits will see them through. Absolutely gutted for everyone in NZ at the moment.

To say the world is reaping it's revenge means it must have some form of conscience and that's just a bit odd.

Edit: now if God were responsible then that's another story...
