Wow I actually know the answer to this si. You'll find what you want to read on here http://googlesightseeing.com/2007/11/runway-roads/
It was eisenhower who initiated the 1 mile in every 5 was to be perfectly straight system and yes it was so that all highways could in an emergency be used as runways. Its also been implemented in other countries (not certain yanks were first to ne honest). |

I know someone who took part in an exercise where they removed the barriers on an autobahn, prepped it for runway use and guarded the area, back in the 80's.
The m54 in Shropshire? I'm trying to think of a stretch straight enough without bridges that could be used. Oh, and there was nothing in my highway design modules at uni about the 1 miles in 5 rule... Last edited by MisterTommyH; 10-06-11 at 11:07 PM. |

Have often heard the same about the US but it's not true, or logical.

I think Bills link makes most sense tbh, the uk alone is scattered with airstrips, military bases, large and small airports and all these would be quick to use at any one time, mways on the otherhand would have to be closed and the stretches cleared of vehicles which isn't a quick exercise depending on time of day.
All this coupled with barrier removal ? Sounds a crock of sh1te IMO. |

I seem to recall that prior to it opening, a Jaguar from Warton did land on the M55 to test the feasibility of it being used as a makeshift airstrip
