I can sympathise jdawg - I'm not that tall either and I had trouble with backing off a stupid bit of concrete at work. Dropped it once (embarrassing, obviously) so next day tried backing onto it instead. Much easier. Moral of the story: keep shuffling around until you find a method you can get comfortable with. And ignore the laughs you WILL get while you're practising!
Oh, and she's called Marilyn (curvy, looks gorgeous, sounds sexy). |

My sympathies too. I have great fun parking my SV every morning at work, I have to ride up a cobbled street then turn her at right angles to to steep incline, get off and back her over a kerb then back on and reverse slowly down a slope and down the side of shop with about a foot of pavement to get her on thanks to numerous flower boxes. I've c0cked it up before and ended up to close to the wall and the side stand has got wedged meaning I had the bike leaning over with me holding her up for about 10 minutes unable to move before someone could hold her steady while I got off and repositioned lol! That was quite entertaining. Other times it goes so smoothly you'd think I'd done it all the time
![]() You'll get the hang of it. On the plus side, parking anywhere else will seem a breeze ![]() |

Jdawg, maybe try holding the pillion handle with your left hand and the handlebar with your right, stood on the opposite side to the centre stand which you leave down... If I don't need the front brake when wheeling the bike on a hill then I stand on the centre-stand side and do the same thing. Might be a little easier than just using the handlebars in your particular situation... And yes, get some R&G crash protectors, they work! |

I've always found the best way is to stand on the right side of the bike so you can cover the front brake and then do all the pushing/pulling with the left hand on the pillion rail. If you need a bit more leverage try putting the right hand pillion peg down and pushing on that with your left knee/thigh as well, although that can be a bit tricky or painful on some bikes depending on how the exhaust is routed. Ideally, as several have said, try and plan so you roll backwards downhill and ride forward up....

try manouvering round the front of the bike, with the stand down stand with both hands on handle bars and put your arms under the mirrors, it may sound strange, but this is the best way i find for pushing my families bike into the garage, gives you huge amounts of control over the bike and if you think its going to go lean it over to the side with the stand.

jdawg,
Dont forget you can leave the bike in gear when it is turned off. That will act as a handbrake and stop it rolling down hill and off the side stand. The bike shouldnt let you start up again still in gear (assuming all the sensors still work) |
