No rubber damper but then there wasn't one on the one I took off. The bike's done 24K miles and the front sprocket was well worn (not so much as it failed the MOT though).

I haven't checked the rear wheel bearing but the bike was given a 'thorough' check-over by the local bike shop a couple of weeks ago, when it had its MOT, and they said there were no issues to highlight. Also this whine started immediately post chain/sprocket change out.
Anyhows, the best way to assess wheel bearing condition? Apart from grabbing the wheel and yanking it from side-to-side and popping it up on a paddock stand and giving it a spin. |

Thats the way to test it, checking for play. It could have been over tightened (even though it is torrqued up correctly). I'd slacken the rear axle nut off and then re do it up. Not necessarily to the exact torque figure, somewhere just below it, do it by feel of how tight it feels.
Was the rear axle installed correctly, the spacers the right way round, all pushed together as it should be? |

Have you checked the Sprocket carrier bearing? I have a whining noise and I have just had my Front sprocket and rear wheel bearings replaced and also chain/wheel properly aligned. Mechanic told me my Sprocket carrier bearing was on its way out. Might be something to check.

All axle spacers went on the right way round and bedded in as per they should but I'll re-torque the back wheel as per daddyjob 's suggestion.
If the noise persists I'll have a look at the sprocket carrier bearings. |

Update - whine is still there after having....
Popped bike on paddock stand; checked rear wheel bearings (no play, noise or rumbles); fine tuned clutch adjustment; re-checked alignment; unscrewed rear axle nuts and re-torqued to 90Nm; rotated rear wheel, chain and sprocket all rotate with no noise or tight spots; removed sprocket cover and checked everything was OK (tho the clutch cable ferrule holder is v close to sprocket bolt end) and ran engine in 1st gear up to about 4K revs. Only thing to report was a certain amount of noise (not a whine, sort of rattly) from the drive sprocket area. It's not loud. On the road - whine varies depending on exactly where the clutch lever is but it's still there when pulled fully on. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that rules out sprocket carrier bearings and the chain itself. It practically goes when coasting (ie: no acceleration or deceleration). Back to the rear wheel? Or clutch maybe? The onset of the whine just a coincidence with the sprocket/chain renewal? |

You haven't mentioned how much free-play you have in the chain.
Start with around 30mm up and down free play at mid span on the lower run with the bike on sidestand or paddock stand.

Chain tension adjusted as per described earlier in the thread. I've done about 350 miles now and the whining noise hasn't changed so will continue 'as is' and update the thread if there's anything to useful to report.
For now it's a whine with no name. |

I know you have adjusted the chain to the correct tension given in the manual but when I recently had a chain fitted and adjusted per the manual, I too developed a whining noise. Remedied by slacking the chain off to 35mm or so bike is a Bandit btw but same principle maybe worth a try.
