Apart from it being illegal and worth points (I think)

If you are coasting you are not in complete control of the vehicle.

I very much doubt it is illegal.

Driving test fail yes.

Yc, you say driving test fail, but years ago when my wife was having driving lessons ( she gave up before taking a test) her instructor told her to clutch in going round corners !!!
When she did it with me in the passenger seat I said WTF are you doing? Her reply, what's she been told to do.
At the place I was working at the time, I asked a young apprentice who was also learning and his instructor told him the same, to this day I still find this disturbing.

There is nothing on gov websites stating it is illegal. If corrected on a driving test quickly enough, it is not necessarily going to end in failure of test.

The only time I would coast is if I was almost out of fuel, can't remember the last time I had to. When I had lessons for the car in 1982 my instructor told me it was illegal. Its probably illegal because your not in control and so driving without due care. Be nice to have a traffic officers view, just out of curiosity.

Aye, I do that too up to lights and junctions if there's nothing else about. Just being lazy really. Oh and I work on a steep cobbled street, I usually leave the clutch in going down it with the brake covered, just habit really. Tis the only place I do it though.

You are not, however in complete control of the vehicle.

Which IS illegal.

So while the actual offence "freewheeling a vehicle on the public highway" does not exist, not being in control of your vehicle is covered elsewhere...

But are you not in essence controlling your vehicle, you are choosing which controls to use or not and surely by staying upright on the bike you must be exercising some level of control

Good luck to the police in proving that you are coasting!

Thats all it is with me TBH.
What more worrying I started doing it at 3am at about 70 on the way from work

With SK, it is an offence but it seems subjective with the officer involved
