Yes, I sold her replacement stator.
Shame they banned blue for upsetting some split *rse on here as he was an asset to the place.

Machine gun sound when attempting to crank = battery does not have enough balls behind it. They can show good voltage off bike but not supply current required. Happens when plates get sulfated up, as I understand it decreases effective area of plates just like if you had tiny battery. It is charged, but can't supply current.

It could be starter problem like dead short from insulator on there. IME that will produce total non-start even with jump leads, just gets everything f***ing hot.

No need to merge stories, just find your old thread and post in that... a mod could stick the 2 threads together.

My advice, swap battery from another SV and try that. If it starts fine, replace battery and check charging system to be on safe side.

Thanks very much Chris, I will try that today, I am sad to hear Blue has been barred, he came across as a brill guy and so helpful.... some people just like to make trouble I think. Thanks again though I will go and try that now and post back shortly,
regards Ian.

Chris a big thank you for your diagnosis, tried a different battery and started first time, checked my new one again and same problem, machine gun rattle but showing 12+ v, took it back to battery outlet this morning and sure enough 2 cells dead and apparently it's part of a small batch of Lucas LYT12ABS batteries that were duff at the time (Dec 11) I am hugely grateful for all the responses and especially Chris who spotted it right away, thank you all for the help,
Best regards,
Ian.

One thing to take from this is never assume because you have fitted a new part that it is O/K.
