So YC was right
![]() Just don't try to countersteer a quad. It don't work. I instinctively countersteer bikes, so I had to completely readjust when riding a quad. |

Edit: Looked into riding a trike (in the winter) a year back and couldn't get an answer to the law as to needing a full car licence, even my local bike unit were unsure of the way it was. I did get this reply from the dvla regarding quads and trikes though; Thank you for your email. You must pass a category B driving test in order to drive a three wheel vehicle or quad. It is no longer possible to drive such a vehicle on the strength of a motorcycle driving licence. Regards Graham Williams www.direct.gov.uk/motoring Bit stupid i think as that means a car driver at 17 can jump on a 'bike' (three or four wheels but still a bike as same controls etc) and ride it but i cant with a full bike licence? Daft to me and annoying.

Oooh, quads...love 'em.
![]() ![]() This was a ride in the Prior Mountains in Montana. We set off from billings at 4am and got back to Bliings at 11pm that night. Was the furthest into wilderness I have ever been. Saw completely wild Mustangs, all sorts of wildlife and some of the snow was awesome to take the quads through. Have fun Ralph...I am mega jealous ![]() |

Class B supersedes B1 for Quad Bikes, because it covers 4 wheelers up to 3500kg, class B1 covers quads, trikes, etc up to 550kg.
If you have class B provisional on your license though, does that mean you could ride a 125cc quad on L-plates? Quads are quite dangerous at speed on the road. Cornering is no problem, just don't countersteer and counter lean, the opposite to a motorbike. It's not very natural though, it has to be learned, whereas most people learned the basics of motorbike lean and countersteer at a very young age when the stabilisers came off their bicycle. My brothers 700cc is a death trap through, far too much power for the suspension, tyres, etc, and it easily gets to speeds where it becomes unstable with weaving and rocking. The waiter in the restauraunt we went to in Portugal offered me shot of his Bombardier 650, but I chickened out. He was a complete loon on it pulling big wheelies and casually pulling stoppies whilst turning into parking spaces. Very impressive.

It's amazing over there. I think we actually got on the quads at about 6am and didn't got off them until about 8pm that night apart from stops and food breaks. It was very organised as there is no "getting someone to pop to the gas station with a jerry can" in a place like the Priors, lol. You have to have your jerry cans filled and strapped on, relief vehicles in case of emergency on standby at the nearest road (sometimes over 100 miles away) and all your food requirements for 72 hours in case you get stuck due to weather.
Only negative was my throttle thumb was really cramping up after first few hours as I have little hands. The only other lady on the ride came over all smiley and produced a piece of garden hose about 4 inches long. She said nothing, just forced it over the throttle and winked. I had a go and OH MY...what a difference. We had such a laugh about it later...she kept spares in case any other women ever turned up and had the same problem ![]() |

![]() Perhaps we should get a few of us together for a do a quad biking thingy somewhere. The one I did was in Neath, south Wales, was expensive but it was a reinstated quarry and was worth it. £35 for 1 hour but £50 for 1.5 hours which is what I'd do next time. Fancy a drive down with some others? |
