Default Re: Maxis Diamond Tyres on a Pointy?

TBH I haven't ridden enough different bikes to get a "feel" for what other tyres are like. My wife's ER6F has Battleaxe tyres on and they seem ok. To me a tyre is a tyre, if it has good reviews and grips well it wet/dry and has good life then I'm good.

Spoken from almost 40 years of riding experience in all weathers on most known ( and almost unheard of ) brands of tyre.
I am riding on 6 year old OE tyres on a SV I bought 6 weeks ago (The tyres have now done 5,000 miles and have really got worse in the last 2,000 miles). I commute 400 miles a week and therefore will run the tyres down before I replace them. However, if I was a new biker, riding only a couple of thousand miles a year, I would have replaced the OE tyres as the couple of hundred pound cost of decent new rubber would be well worth it.

The OE tyres, once part worn, I feel do hugely reduce the enjoyment of what is a very capable bike.

As stated many many times, any modern tyre, in the right size, from a manufacturer you've heard of is going to be just fine.

I've discovered over the years that I'm pretty un-fussy about tyres, having commuted and tracked on most of the main manufacturer's efforts over an increasing number of years.

My preference (and this is just mine) is to stick with a touring tyre from someone you've heard of, in the original sizes for the SV (120/60, 160/60). Many other people prefer the 120/70 front, but I seem not to, feels a little more sudden to turn, which i don't especially like. Others would say this makes it more responsive. Neither of us would be "wrong".

So I'd happily fit the Maxxis tyres if that's what was in my budget, and availible, and I woudn't worry for a second about whether someone out there made a tyre with more "likes"

The only question is one of tyre life. I've had about 11,000 miles out of my last pair of Dunlop Roadsmarts, and that included at least 2 trackdays. If the cheaper tyre is going to last less than that (and you're going to own a bike for long enough for this to make a difference) a slightly higher purchase price can work out cheaper in the long run. However, I'm informed most of us now keep a bike for a couple of years and do around 3,000 miles a year. So aparently my concerns about such matters are not relevent for everyone.

I've had a full licence since 1971, NO tyres can be as bad as the 'plastic' OE that Honda used to fit back then, Had my sv from new [07] and found the Dunlops to be excellent, i was gutted when i picked up a nail in the front with only 2k on the clock, and as my son recons i'm one of the last' late brakers' , recomended a Continental road attack. he'd got them on his Ninja. so had one put on the front, found it drops into a corner quicker than the Dunlop ,which took a few miles to get used to,but sticks like youknow what to a blanket.[ I take it that Continental still make them ?]

Has anyone had experience with Dunlop Sportmax Qualifiers or Maxxis Supermaxx Sport or Avon Storm 2 Ultras? A garage I asked about the Maxxis said they were budget tyres and not worth bothering with.

About three weeks ago I fitted some Continental Contimotion tyres to my SV, they cost £160 for the pair and took a couple of rides to get to know. What I have found so far is that they grip very well, even when compared to the Road attacks I replaced. By my own admission, I am not a fast rider or keen to get my knee down, but I do ride every day in all weathers and these tyres have been consistently reassuring. Just another option to add to your list of budget choices.

Criticism of them is for the construction of the tyres, when I had these fitted, I required a lot of balance weights on two points on the wheel. So far that is the only thing I think of as a negative.

Where about did you get them from JF? Someone else had mentioned them. I'll have to do some digging on them. I have emailed Maxxis asking about the 160/60/17 rear needed.

My local bike garage had them in stock, but then my local place is damn good, which is why I keep using them. For those in my Area, it is Bridge Motor Works in Weston.

Well I could get a set from M&P for £150, however, I doubt many people around here would fit them for me. I'll have to ask around. The reviews look good on them and they seem to last a long time. If I don't hear back from Maxxis this may be the way to go.
