My back garden sounds exactly the same and I'm where you are!
I want it level and lush I've spoken to a landscaper and all they've said they would do in a similar situation is buy the soil and lay it directly on top of the existing lawn. Use a rake to fill in the dips dragging it around until its all level/regular.
Then all you need to do is seed it, he said there is little to no use doing this at this time of year though unless I want a muddy garden all winter. Wait until March then lay the soil, it only needs 3 weeks to settle (less if you whacker it).
Then seed the whole lawn, by the time the soil had sprouted and become ready to cut cut the whole lawn, 2 or 3 cuts in to 2014 and you'll not be able to tell new from old (Provided the whole lawn area was seeded and not just the new soil).

That sounds like some good advice, esp as its come from a landscaper. I can get soil for £40 a tonne, unless anyone knows of cheaper.

Depends what you've got in the way of weeds in the current lawn.

If there's a lot there they WILL push up through and you will have a deep rooted weed issue in your new lawn.

cutting it really short (scalping) will help to kill it a bit too, but why you would want to kill it first I don't know really, just cover it over with the topsoil n that will kill it anyway (no photosynthesis). the idea of seeding it would work, but it will take quite a while before the lawn is ready to be walked on. turfing it will get you a much quicker, but much more expensive way of doing it. if you are set on killing the grass first, see if you can get friendly with a local golf course and the greenkeepers and they MIGHT well be able to sort you out a bit of decent strong weed killer that'll kill everything (grass and weeds) and it'll be a helluva lot cheaper than stuff you'd get from a garden centre.

Only if you do it deep enough, the grass will grow through a fair few inches of soil... and so will the other weeds which is more of a problem and more why I'd say people would want to kill it.

Whilst disk cleaner and so on will no doubt work, i wouldn't want to try getting anything to grow afterwards. Use this;

http://www.roundup-garden.com/

It's systemic, ,so kills to the root and disperses in soil, leaving no poisonous residue. Then follow the advice Owenski has given.

I wasn;t serious with the disc cleaner comment. Just that it would work in killing the lawn.

Cool, with regard to weeds there aren't any, my wife is funny about them so it is weeded fairly often, its a nice looking lawn just bloody uneven.

if it's only uneven in places just top dress it heavily rather than rip it up n start again.
