Merry Christmas to one and all.
Thanks for all of your advise,it's got me thinking about dslr now!!! Quick question on that front, if I have a lense from an old film SLR can I use it on a digital one?
I'm also thinking about waiting till after Christmas as there might be a raft of second hand cameras coming up as people got newer/better ones for Xmas.

Thats a good plan.
DSLR can do so much more than a bridge.
And allot have auto modes.
So worth the extra if your going to be a hobbyist or go on to bigger things

The answer to that is an "it depends". If it's the right lens, then yes. With Canon you need an EF or EF-S lens for a digital SLR. That's how I got started on DSLRs. My father in law had an EOS 1000 film SLR, so I bought the EOS 350D body and the lens fitted straight on. I then bought a 80-200 zoom lens from the market for £35, and got some good kit for not much money.
It's worth doing some research about what you're thinking of buying in advance, so you're not disappointed. For instance, the EOS 350D doesn't have a "live view" mode. Not that I ever needed it, but if it's something you want, it's as well to be aware. More modern cameras will have a much wider range of ISO than older cameras too. But to get started, you can't go wrong with something second hand, especially if it comes with a warranty.
Good luck with your choices.

After reading the comments . Think it's a luck of the draw thing with most of these.
Like when I bought a 3 in 1 printer. One in Chelmsford Tesco.
