Just over a year ago, I complained about a policeman who had concealed himself on a slip road onto the A40 at Swakeleys roundabout and had his car parked diagonally, blocking one lane of the two on the slip road. He had the driver's door open and was aiming the beam of the radar round the end of the trees while resting it on the roof. I thought this was incredibly cynical and actually served no useful purpose as the passing cars were in NSL zone. After involving my local MP following a lack of response I was told that he was perfectly entitled to conceal himself! So not about road safety at all, just about collecting revenue.

Kaivalagi, I do hope you're right.

Ninth, I got pulled for doing 98 in a 60 way back in the 90s on an FZR600. I had to take my girlfriend with me when I appeared in court because of the fear of losing my licence. I was self employed at the time and did a high road mileage in my van. My income was insufficient to employ a driver and I offered proof to the court.

On returning from their brief adjournment, the chief magistrate gave me the tiniest of nods as he entered the room. I had to resist the urge to fist pump the air knowing that a ban wasn't on the cards. They deemed 3 pts and a £200 fine appropriate in the end, happy days!

And you would have been wrong. If you are stopped and reported at the time of the alleged offence they don't need to send you an NIP through the post. The whole point of an NIP is to let drivers know that they may be prosecuted for an offence (the clue is in the name) and they need to let you know within 14 days as that is considered a reasonable time for you to be able to remember events.

A police officer only needs to caution you if they are going to question you about a suspected offence. They are supposed to caution you after reporting you for an offence, however failure to do so is not a bar to prosecution, it may only make any reply inadmissible.

Luck didn't come into it mate, it was all skill. At those speeds the camera wouldn't have had time to capture you.

I met a policeman while queuing to book my wedding at the town hall and when I relayed what had happened he told me that they should not have prosecuted after failing to send a NIP. Surely they have to notify you of their INTENDED action, not just what they have already done (i.e. started a prosecution)?

I am so pleased that I've never suffered that. These days it would be difficult to find a 30 limit where you could do 81mph, safely or otherwise - to many cars, speed humps, traffic lights, pedestrian crossings etc, etc.

Mine was £500 with 1 month, plus solicitors fees...a £1000 fine back in the 80's was a lot of money though! I had the same argument that I needed my licence for work, decent character reference etc.

I agree it sounds bad, and I was caught breaking the rules so far cop govenor and all that...but the area on on the outskirts of a Norfolk village, one side of the road was a field and the other was not paved and had no more junctions ahead...the NSL sign was just out of reach...lesson learnt that day...
