Thanks for the comments, guys. I feel a bit better. We've inspected in the daylight and it looks like the above damage is all there is, as long as I don't need a new handlebar.

They would have hit my tyre, so no luck there.

Nope, unfortunately this is one of the few areas on a huge campus that is not covered. It sits behind a new building, which obscures the cameras.

Would the cameras not be able to help trace who it might have been? Narrowing down the times etc, watching where they go?

Might be a worthwhile exercise!

Thanks, but it fell on its side on the ground (it was hit from behind - on the rear tyre). The guy whose landrover it fell towards (parked next to me) was the one who reported it being on the floor, so I don' t reckon it hit another car. Good job really as things could get really complicated if it had.

I was under the impression this was only if someone was injured?
Nope. You're obliged to stop and exchange insurance info. If there is an accident and someone is injured then the police must be called anyway, otherwise you don't need to. I think.
Ah ha, I think that's what I meant, the POLICE need to be called if there are injuries, otherwise they don't need to be, yeah?

Just an idea. Was it windy and could it have been blown over. The weather here in Ireland has been very bad and I have seen a car blown over.

That sucks...

As for insurance I dont think it applies if the accident happened on private property ????

Hope you find the that did that to your bike

It was not particularly windy and the bike was sheltered by cars on either side. I think the wind would probably blow it over away from the stand as well. My bike had dropped on the stand side.

The good news is we have some pretty keen bikers working here, including one who is an engineer. They've put my bike back together in the workshop and reckon the bits that snapped off are stronger than before. Still need a new indicator, but I've had it checked out by a mechanice and he says no probs riding home on it tonight.

Thanks for all the advice. Money wise, I think it's down to me to cough up. I'm tpft, the school's insurance has a disclaimer for accidents (as mentioned above). My union provide limited insurance through their membership but this is for malicious damage and they don't reckon that a hit-and-run can be classed as such.

But it looks like it won't be too expensive - phew. I dread to think what would have happened if it had hit a car on the way down. I suppose I'd be liable for that, too. Then I'd have had an insurance claim for certain and higher premiums on bike and car forever more...
