'scuse my ignorance, but will this have any effect on speedo readings, or are they not affected?

That's not quite true Jonboy, I have found with the 46 rear sprocket on, when you boot it, and I mean really boot it (and don't learn on the bars more) the front wheel pops up and thus the speedo will give a false reading of speed as it is actually off the ground.
