Noise reduction, apparently. It's an absolute b**tard to get out, by the way, if you're thinking of it. It definately gave a benefit when i had the Renegade filter in but I couldn't say if it does for the BMC, never had it on with that filter.
BTW, once I'm back on the bike I'll be getting various dyno runs done, to comapre the RS with a desnorkelled stock filter among other things... So if you're OK to wait I can hopefully give you conclusive figures (won't be tuning for peak power for both, just a/f charts to compare.)

I'm not sure if I'm thinking of the same "foam" you are. Mine was actually quite easy to remove. It just had some metal tabs that I had to bend and slip the foam off of. Perhaps someone could show me a picture so I'm sure.

Hum, don't know what that is... What I'm talking about's just a thin high-density foam glued to the underside of the tank, directly over (and behind) the filter on the carbed bikes. It could be it's a territorial noise thing, mind.

Maybe Suzuki realised how much of a pain it was to remove, so they mounted it differently. I was wondering if it was a heat displacer so the fuel didn't do something irraddic.

Well, I've had it removed for about 4000 miles and I'm still not dead, if that's any help

It certainly is. And that brings up my next question. How much ambient heat would it take to combust gasoline? If it was just radiant energy.

it will boil first.. you need a spark and/or compression to ignite gasoline vapors. My foam has been gone for 10K+? miles... shes just peachy.

FWIW........my SK1's tank was replaced under warranty last year & didn't come with any foam on the underside.......????
