Precisely. Oil cheap, engines dear.

All modern motors will last an excellent life if they're given the chance to, some things to remember:

Change the oil regularly, if you do lots of cold starts, town trips and short trips do it more.
Don't "warm up" the engine before you ride off, start it get on and go - ride gently 'till it's warm.
Don't scream the tits off it when it's cold, the oil isn't working properly.
Don't let the engine labour at low revs, lots of load on the bearings, not so much oil pressure, keep it spinning freely.

performance is as good as ever, some oil consumption from leakdown, it occasionally puffs smoke on startup, nothing I am concerned about yet,

oh yea, maintained per owners manual, no more, no less. it's my belief that excess maintenance can be more harmful to an engine than a lack of

Ah-ha, the old "If it ain't broke don't fix it ploy" huh?

Whilst I agree in principle with that, it does greatly depend on your specific usage and situation, if you do a greater proportion of your miles as shorter journeys, perhaps in town as well, then you'll be placing a heavier strain on the oil in particular, as it may not be reach suitable temperatures in order to evaporate the acidic condensation commonly found in engines at lower temps, with the oil diluted so, it won't last as long/do it's job as well, as such more frequent changes run only the risk of wearing out the thread on the drain plug, not damaging anything.
If you lived 5 miles from a motorway, then drove 50 miles down it every morning and the same in reverse every evening, you'd be able to extend the oil changes and still have less engine wear.
All depends on what you do with it.

more than if it ain't broke, don't fix it, I don't think it's good for fasteners, every time you reuse one you weaken it, also increase the potential for cross threading, everytime somethingis opened up, is one more opportunity for contamination ... dirt getting places it shouldn't etc. while an oil change is minimal risk, with modern oils, I don't think it's necessary, they have the ability to hold a lot of solids in suspension
