Depends what the criteria is

I agree with the 916
The FS-1E would be up there to
What about the RC30
Or the Honda Oval pistoned honda jobbie, I cant remember what its called, but I think it was the first road bike to have an underseat exhaust

Trust me, when you're 16 year old it is a full blown, mean mudder, growling motorcycle!

With chopper bars/forks and an upsloping tank?

Doesn't look like any FS1E I've ever seen, but I'll accept what you say.

And if you're was like that then it definitely had a nob on it

It was the FS-1SE which was the chopper version of the FS-1E. I don't know how long they were in production for, but they were certainly around in the mid 80s.

No argument there then.

I mised it, i was at work! I agree with a 916, and i also think the RC30 should be up there, along with the first Fireblade. The Cub 90 shouldn't have won, it was built on a budget, handles like a pushbike and has a really unforgiving automatic clutch (Good for wheelies though!). I hope the yamaha RD350LC was in there comewhere as well! I can't comment on the fizzies and bantams as thats way before my time, to me they are just skinny things, it must be a charisma thing!

It was the FS-1SE
Knew it wasn't an FS1E

I'd say best bike IMHO would have to be GSXR750, first race rep and grandaddy of all road going sports bikes. Nuff said.

The Cub is the rightful winner.

It's about all time great motorbikes not just the ones that any of us may remember, the Cub is the greatest 'cos it got more people on two, (powered) wheels than any other machine, it did this by not being a motorcyclists motorcycle, the 916 RC30 et al are undoubtedly great bikes and landmarks in the history of motorbiking*, but they appeal and sell only to those who already ride, they don't, (in any significant way) get people biking in the first place, and let's not forget that while the Beetle is usually quoted as being the most popular vehicle of all time it didn't even come close to the Honda's stupendous record of 40,000,000 Cubs in 40 years.

PS Cubs aren't automatic, they have a centrifugal clutch and either 3,4, (or rarely), 5 speed manual 'boxes, operated by a lever on the left, (just like your bike), there is a heel and toe lever so that you can press down on the back to go up the 'box, and down on the front to go down the 'box, without scuffing the top of your shoes, (non bikers in mind see), or the front of the lever can be used as you would normally do.

*But they were only comparatively small steps forward. If what's wanted is the machine that was the most significant technological step forward then it must only be the Zenith Gradua, such an improvement over the status quo that it was banned from competition.

Zenith Gradua

I have to agree that the Cub engine, in all its guises, is an engineering masterpiece.

They are about as bomb-proof as you get. I remember fitting a C90 into a go-kart for someone who wanted a quiet kart for his young kid to run round his (large) drive without annoying the neighbours. Picked up an out of date 125 racing kart rolling chassis for relative peanuts, and went to the scrappy for a C90.

Took head off, cleaned valves etc and refitted head with the old gasket (budget you understand )

Turned out the oil filter (like a tea-bag thing) was completely blocked, the cam bearings had more wear in them than the points gap , but you could still set the points so it would run, and some fresh oil and it purred like a kitten.

Ran for years with ne'er a spanner put to it

I think for an entertainment prog, their selection wasn't too far off the mark all things considered.

Knuckle-head and Bonnie for their place in social history, CB750 for definite (not so much broke-the-mould as made a new mould).
