I used Yoshimoto no-rusto-preen, it's like WD40 with more solvents in.

I peeled stickers off a 1992 GS500 only last year heated it by using a hairdryer and then just pulled at the sticker. There was some residue left but i think i just used some shampoo, and polish to get it off. I didnt notice any colour difference to be honest (It was a fine example of a 92 GS) but to make sure i used some t-cut on the bodywork and it was if it was never there.

Hairdryer, fingernail, meths and patience! If the colour is slightly different then use T-cut or similar and take your time then polish it (I use AutoGlym extra gloss paint protector ) or wax it to seal it again. If it is bad you could always sweet talk a bodyshop to run a "Mop" over it. A mate of mine is a a sprayer and I had a dull panel on my last car and it brought it up much better.
