Very strange that they all charge so much extra, that is testament to robbery.

You must either have a very high insurance group car or one with a horrendous history of theft or serious incidents (or both!)

I've not had my licence a year, brand new bike, got points, had accidents, don't garage it, no NCB and mines half that fully comp.

This I do have. When I rung up to let them know I had received the SP30 the guy on the other end of the phone was laughing as he told me my premium would be affected when I next needed to renew.

I'm talking about my car which was about £1,200 to insure and its a group 20 hence why its so much.

My bike insurance was £251 and thats TPFT, parked on the road, no security, no NCB, not had my licence a year and 3 points, which I thought was ok.

My car insurance didn't change either when i got points

I think its down to a combination of factors and different insurance companies which is why its always a good idea to ring around. Some insurance companies don't care about one offence whilst others do. Some companies don't like insuring high insurance group cars, others don't like young drivers. *Shrug*

I have a group 20 sportscar and 3 points so I have expensive insurance.

I think the only way it could be a worse combination is if I was in my early 20s!

I'm currently driving a Golf GTI 16V so it's not a cheap car to insure but points didn't matter.

But your right different insurance companies do look at things differently. Some like to know what you do for a living whereas my bike insurer never asked. Some want a 5 year clear driving record some say 3 years before you don't have to mention stuff. It all depends. I spend hours finding different quotes when it's time for renewal cos of this, after all nothing else to do at work.

Interestingly its cheaper to insure a 1.9 GTI than a 1.6 GTI

The majority of companies do not charge for one speeding however when a second SP30 is gained they will hit you for both, be warned.

Sp30's like the majority of all motoring convictions carry a 5 year rehabilitation period thanks to the Act 1974, purely due to the fine aspect of the charge. 5 years is a long time to go without a second speeding offence, youv'e been warned.

KATE - Your car is a group 20 but is probably also a suffix vehicle or 'termed' vehicle. This basically means there are additional conditions on your policy due to the car, one of the rules may result in ANY SP30 costing you extra.

This would explain maybe why you are getting charged extra but others aren't.

Already a proud owner of three points (speeding on bike),

Received a letter this morning, confirming the offence and asking who was driving the car... (my pen pal visiting from Zimbabwe who has now flown back and I have no forwarding address... officer)

In my defence, I had driven (car) over the line whilst the lights were on green (so slightly past the set of lights) and was sitting behind another car who was waiting for a space from oncoming traffic to turn right. I’m guessing the ‘space’ came when the lights had turned red and I unknowingly continued straight over the crossroads once the car had turned. Also (I shall go back to the road to check), but the only set of traffic lights facing my direction were the ones I had already past (no lights the other side of the crossroads)..!

Gulp.!

When Idris Francis takes his case to the ECOHR hopefully the requirement to disclose who was driving will be removed - the only offence in the UK that is effectively "Guilty until proven guilty"
