if thats what you want, go for it!!! just think though that at some stage after passing their test EVERYBODY drops their bike. it might just be turning it round in the street and it catches you out, are you going to take that chance? imho i would spend a year on an unfaired bike like a bandit/sv and then get an R6. i've been riding 15 yrs and managed to drop my brand new Hayabusa whilst putting it on a paddock stand. luckily i had decent quality crash bungs fitted and there was only a tiny scratch on the swingarm, but it really ****ed me off for days!!!

restricting an r6? sounds a little pointless to me. In this situation I think the others are right, the SV does fantastically well restricted. I've never heard that said about any other bike.
The r6 makes it's power very high in the rev range, and you'll find you're losing almost all of the good stuff with the restriction. In short, you'll be spending an enormous amount of money for alot of expensive bike, without any of the benefits and with all of the expenses (including fairings when you do the usual newbie drop)

Go for the SV first, you won't be dissapointed by the performance, whilst you are learning on it you can save for the R6. It's true when they say the learning to ride really starts after you've passed the test.

Don't be the reason for the post "I told you so"

An R6 is a good bike, but it's a revvy little thing especially if you're used to an ER5 or another twin. I've only ever ridden a full power one, but am lead to believe that restricting an R6 can lead to all sorts of flat spots in the power curve.

Now if that's true, then I know that I would be more than tempted to remove the restrictors. Then you've got instant invalid insurance.

If you really want an IL4, you might be better with a smaller capacity like a 400 to start off. You can pick up a CBR400 or a VFR400 for little over a grand, and you won't lose much money on them either. (I paid £800 for my CBR400, then sold it for £850)

If you're old enough, perhaps you can do direct access then you buy an unrestricted bike?

Get the R6 for the pose if you like that sort of thing; but an SV is the practical and sensible option. I had a restricted Bandit 400 when I was 17 and this brought a new meaning to the word gutless. It's not an R6 I know but similar principle in that they both make their power high up in the rev range. I then got an SV when I was 18, which was restricted - far better bike - much more realistic everyday useability just because it has the low down torque. On the other hand, you could just buy an R6 and, ahem, unrestrict it (like I may just have done ) and live happily ever after.

Get what you want, if you want an R6 go for it, if you dont want an SV really in your heart you'll never be happy with it.

However I do agree with the comments from others, I think the SV would be a better purchase for you, it'l also probably be cheaper to buy than the R6 so you'll have some spare cash for a can etc etc etc

whatever you get enjoy and ride safe

I would have LIKED an R6 after passing my test (3 years ago) but opted for a slightly more sensible bike to start out on. I was recommended good bikes that wouldn't kick you up the @rse and spit you off if you made a mistake. I made plenty of mistakes (still do ) but my sv has seen me safely through them.

I expect I'll have an R6 one day but not until I'm a seasoned enough rider.

My mate's gone from 2 years on a fazer 400 to an R6 and she says it's a handful that WILL spit her off if she's not careful (but that it's also AWESOME and she has alot of fun on it ). She actually associated it's temperment to mine... *shrugs*

I know it's all down to HOW you handle the bike but I'd never recommend a bike like an R6 to someone who's just passed their test. I'd say work your way up to it.

I would of thought you'd be asking for trouble here...Get an SV. I'm 42 and still cant afford the insurance for a cbr600. What about some further training? IAM or Bikesafe may help you get your insurance a little cheaper
