Filler's easy enough, if you b***s it up you can just do it again. Don't stir it when you mix it (like a cocktail) squash and knead it (like dough) and you'll get less air bubbles (I used to always do it wrong, the difference is huge...) Don't put on loads either or you'll hate sanding it back (plus, you're more likely to screw up if you have to sand off a load- you're likely to get too slapdash with the sanding and take it too far.

Also, for some reason I found I couldn't judge the shape right till it had paint on... So before you decide it's perfect, try putting a quick coat of primer on to see how it catches the light.

Do you have a power sander?

And remember, don't sand back metallics!

I do have a power snader, but I won't use it! I think I will be spraying it black, so as to minimise effort when painting it.

UUUUUSE the power sander! Not for final work, but for shaping. Unless it's a massive belt job... Mouse sanders are the nuts for fixing fairings, take all the grunt work out of it and mean you cna realistically use a pretty fine grade to do your shaping.
