I'm on my third guitar myself, been playing for around 18 years now (sh*t I'm getting old) but just never had much money to throw at it.
Also have 3 guitars (if you can call them that)...

Got one cheap Aria steel string acoustic, almost turning 15 years now.
One cheap Alvarez Dana II electric, bought 13 years ago. It was the lowest in the range with the "TriForce" pickup (triple-coil that basically s*cks) but the guitar has the slimmest neck I've ever tried and you can set up a real low action on it. With .009's it's buttery smooth. I've replaced the original tremolo and tuners and replaced them with Wilkinson and Grover bits. Now it stays in tune for more than 2 minutes. Need to replace the pickups, but they're expensive and wouldn't give me the flexibility I'd like to have (I won't even consider anything else than DiMarzio Evolutions for that guitar... yet, a bit of a Vai freak ).

My latest addition, a Line6 Variax 300 to complement my also recently acquired Line6 PodXTLive. Those two give me a good deal of the aforementioned flexibility on a budget, and throw in a great sound for a really bargain price. The finish on the 300 isn't as good as the "bigger" 500 - 700, but you can't beat it's sub-500 euro price tag.

When I'm rich and famous ( ) I'll splash out for that Ibanez JEM 7 and a Variax Line6 700 (or whatever they come up with by then)... and maybe a Godin LGX-T... and while we're at it, an Ibanez LACS 7-string... ok, I'll stfu

My sisters mate recently got a white Jem777. God, how I wanted one when Vai was a (nearly) credible guitarist to aspire to. Perferred the Black Floral Pattern to his gaudy 'I've just puked multicoloured paint all over my £1500 guitar'!

Me has got....
Ovation Applause Electro-acoustic. Sounds lovely wired up, a bit flat otherwise.

A Jim Reed PRS, basically very similar to the PRS in style, but 1/4 of the asking price, with decent, but not fantastic hardware. Wilkinson trem and twin coil tapped humbuckers by Kent Armstrong. Has anyone heard of this guy? They're hand built in Italy, but he's a Yank. AFAIK, only one importer to the UK.

Two old warhorses. A Hohner ST, my first electric which i put EMG81's into. Here's a hint to how long I've been shredding, it's snakeskin!

The other has a nice history. An Arai (not sure of model, poss. AVZ1) from very early 80's in Gibson Explorer style. This guitar has toured the world with my mate's folk rock band. Africa, US, Canada, Europe it's seen it all. Of course being a folk rock band he stripped the paint and had it bare oiled wood. Euuuchh, that had to go. Now metallica, black album, black as black can be, as it should be - matt black. None more black!

Money no object dream axe? Ibanex JS1000, the rare chrome ones! I think initially just 5 made. Tho the plexiglass one with blue neon inserts was very cool too.

Funnily enough, I bought one of the single coils I used to have in the Squier off him. Ebay at its finest. "This is one of Seymour Duncan's finest pickups, allegedly, but I've fitted it into 5 different guitars and it sounded like a strangled cat."

personally I get my sons guitars from imuso.co.uk usaully cheaper than most places and deliver nextday, boy had the fender squirer to start with but thats been "borrowed" by the daughters boyfriend, an encore which I dont know the model of and a BC rich tribal which sounds great. He also has a bass given to him by a session musician which was home made and sounds the mutts which I play when I have the house to myself.

the guitars i own or have owned are:

ibanez JEM 7 WH (the 555 is a cheap, nasty version with the crappy tremolo system)
ibanez RG-3120 prestige with breed pickups (same as JEM 7 BK)
fender stratocaster USA series with fralin pickups
paul reed smith custom 24 10 top in whale blue with the bird inlayed fretboard (cracking guitar but heavy)
gibson les paul custom 3 pickup 'black beauty' reissue (again sodding heavy)

amp wise i use a Tech 21 Trademark as well as a nice amp called a Bad Cat Cub which i waited half a year to get shipped in from the USA, standard EL84/12AX7 valve thing but it sounds fat as f**k (pardon the french)

don't bother with effects except for a 535Q wah wah pedal which is ok but going scratchy!

i played in a band for years but gave up due to work commitments, hoping to start it again soon.. i'm not a brilliant player by any means, but i like quality stuff.. it feels so much more satisfying that a crappy 25W noname amp and a korean strat copy.
