You don't, but as it is OUR national day, it should be a National holiday....

St George me ****.

Here's something English people can be justifiably proud of:

Alan Turing's birthday: 23 June

Nice summer day off. Few pints sitting outside. Computer people, WWII vets, and civil rights activists can all have increasingly drunk chats.

Cant lose. We have Martin Luther Kings B'day over in the US. Much more into that than George the Dragon Slayer.

Maybe that's why you're there, and not here.... What is wrong with the English (or British for that matter) wanting a National day to celebrate the fact that it is OUR country...

I am confused.
I am not saying that you shouldnt have a national day. I am saying, a cool one to pick would be Turing's birthday. I think this would make a really good national holiday for England. You can celebrate the fact its your country, winning WWII, the triumph of English genius.

Sorry mate.I didnt mean to denigrade the idea a National English Holiday by any means.

Nothing at all... But you do get people quite reasonably questioning the relevance of St George, or St Andrew in Scotland. The former being known solely for his myth, and the latter being a christian martyr with absolutely no connection to Scotland other than a few vague legends, and possibly relics.

Burns day would be more relevant for Scotland, probably. For England... Wayne Rooney's birthday? 30th of July? It'd make sense for it to be something with some meaning to modern UK citizens. I wonder how many people even know the stories of St George and St Andrew?

We don't have a lot of truly significant dates, though. It's not like we have Independance Day or similiar.

TBH I think any holiday would have precisely **** all to do with national pride, and everything to do with sleeping in and possibly getting very drunk.

I guess my issue is that not enough English people have pride in their Country. You see celebrations for St Patricks day, Welsh weaking a leek on St Davids day etc, but the "English" just don't seem to care, and that's wrong....

I hate many things about this Country, especially recent politics, but I'm still proud to call my self British or English...
