A pipette won't work in anycase.

...but you would need to buy a new sump plug washer (what do you mean 'NO' ) so oil filter is best :P

Cheers
Ben

why would you need a new sump plug washer?

take it your theory is its a crush washer! and needs replacing every time?
or something along those lines?

ive never changed the washer and is still going strong.....on that basis i would say it would be ok to undo the sump plug...let oil out .... then do it up again!

by this i am not saying that it will not leak or need another washer....just that its likily you can get away with it!

messy but will do the job!
DO NOT use the sump plug to gat a dab too much oil out, loosen the oil filter a turn or two:

The oil filter that you don't have to remove.
The oil filter that you won't get oil all over you hands by loosening.

Taking the sump plug out is a sure fire way of getting oil all over your hands and also stands the likleyhood of not being able to get back in when you need to stem the flow.

Well in the end I decided to try and siphon some out. But I did not have a tube thin enough to reach through the filler cap to the sump so plan B. Remove the pump spray lid from bathroom cleaner. Clean out residual bathroom cleaner. Prime with old engine oil to make sure no water or bathroom cleaner still in it. Stick tube into sump and pump away. Took out enough to get it to just below F mark. Filled about bottom inch of the jam jar was pumping into. Then cleaned and replaced bathroom pump before wife noticed it was missing.

If anyone else is thinking of draining some out, the only pipe I could find that would actually fit within the casing was probably no more than 2-3mm in diameter. Having just had my driveway replaced, the thought of risking covering it in oil by either the filter or sump plug removal methods was not worth the risk.

Lesson learned :-
Fill a bit, check, fill a bit more, check, repeat.

Cheers,
Mark

Hi,

Hopefully I've just corrected a 'Novice' mistake. When I do my weekly pamper of the bike on sunday I checked the oil levels 'cold' and thought 'I best top that up!', anywho I noticed a burning smell on the way into work today and realised when I got to work that the back end was covered in oil! I've got limited tools to work on the bike here (at work) but saw this thread and used the 'windowclene bottle' plan. Seemed to work a treat ! Took ages to pump enough out, I really overfilled it by the looks of it. I can now see the top of the oil in the window so gonna 'hit and hope'. I do need to give her a quick clean up before riding out on her today bein the back wheel is still covered in it and clean her off tonight (lovingly!). Just wanted to know if theres anything to be watching out for because of this, should I expect any abnormal engine noise or anything? There wasnt anything mechanically wrong with her on the way in (not that I could tell anyway) so hopefully no harm done??

Any advice would be greatly appreciated before I get back out on her tonight.

Cheers

Phil

Turn it upside down and shake it.

Well, it makes exactly as much sense as using the sump bolt
