Ok, from trafalgar square then

Oxford - A4 -> M4 -> M25 -> M40 (the A40 is always horrible)
west - A4 -> M4
South West - A4 -> A416 -> M3
South - Nasty A23 *spits* not fast at all but still quickest to Brighton
South east - embankment -> A2
East - City - A13

Dunno much about going north, but get to the North circular as quick as possible and then choose your spur off that. Basically the best way to get out of the city is to find the dual carriageway sections as soon as possible. When not on those, always take the straightest route as all roads have the same average speed. You save time by keeping it simple.

Takes me 40-50 minutes to get back to Gravesend without riding hard or fast.... From Morgate.

Tried your way before, doesn't work The A13 is too slow and tight.
Coming back my way you can always get through the traffic (or take a side road) and not get caught up.

Never ever go down old kent road though......

200cc 4 stroke scoota (88mph wooooooooo) , 31minutes door to door.

Morgate to Longfield in Kent (mothers house)........

The advantage of a very light bike that can bop in and out of the traffic very quickly.
