Zig, what the bloody hell weren't you doing this time?

my advice is to stay indoors - it's a big bad world out there (and you're usually in the thick of it!)

but agree, I'd make them justify the action and play the bureaucracy game back so that you're covered. the worst that could happen is a fine/points for the trick bits. surely they'd need a professional mechanical assessment doing?

I entirely agree with the copper, he hadn't finished the sentence "...in your hands" And to that there is no argument!

dont quote me but i believe the policeman is within his rights to impound the bike if indeed it was dangerous...and only you really know whether it was.

He would also not have to give you a ride, if i remember rightly...unless to the cells for questioning and having an unsafe vehicle.

If it were impounded unfairly, then the inspector he would need the authority of is the one that you would want to complain to, or possibly sergent... but dont hold out for getting you money back if it did have a loud can and dodgy number plate, as they are illegal...and they may well decide to do you...

this is my very limited and slightly educated guess work, so could be very wrong...and policies vary from force to force.

The chain would have to be a hell of a slack to justify impouding your bike. If it's that slack then it could jump the spocket and lock the rear. Happened to me once... not nice.

Sounds more like they were trying to compensate for their personal inadequacies!

So after stating to you that he was going to impound the bike cos it was dangerous .....he then lets you ride off cos of other pressing business.

Sorry but he is totally in the wrong to do that. Either it is dangerous and should be impounded, or it is requiring attention but is still technically roadworthy.

Phone the police station and ask politely why you have been treated in this manner !!

If the policeman truly thought that the bike was dangerous he should have surely advised you not to ride it any further without mechanical attention before speeding off to his more important call.

Nowt as queer as folk- as my grandma used to say. Staggered that a copper would know chain tolerances, wasn't aware there was any legislation on them for MOT like there is for tires.

Mind you I have snapped two, both times tonne up in the fast lane of the M1, the second one took a piece out of the heal of my big old biker boot and ripped my chain guard to fck. Glad I wasn't wearing my flip flops- not that that would've mattered if I'd dropped it. If there isn't legislation- praps there should be. Maybe he saved your life- assuming you've tightened your chain- I propose a letter of thanks

Indicators aren't a legal requirement

Can't remember, are indicators one of those daft places where if they're there they have to work, but if there's none then that's fine? Like parking lights.
