Yup, definately will not work with a dimmer. Will flash like buggery, bit like the set of a horror film! :P

Reminds me of years ago, a few guys gathered in the workshop touching the PSU case of a cheap Apple IIe clone, yes a long time ago.

Saying to each other, there is definately something there.

along comes my mate the techy, hears them, Mr know it all grabs the nearby scope leads whilst still got his hand on the case. whoops he just earthed himself.

WALLOP

As others have said, any doubt change it.

I would also hazard a guess that you still use conventional fuses in your consumer unit as you have not said anything about tripping breakers etc.. Bite the expense bullet and upgrade to a modern consumer with MCBs. A resonable size split box including MCBs and RCD shouldn't cost more than £50. Easy job to change anyone asks you had it done before the new rules applied.

Incidently how old is your house. Mine was built in 1958, when I moved in 1986 I condemmed the wiring immediately as it was perished with the insulation falling off.
2 of my neighbours have asked me to look at their electrical problems, and get a shock (pun intended) when I tell them they need a complete rewire.

BTW I have seen incidents where fitting a replacement light switch causes shorts etc because the wiring has been placed behind the screw hole and the insulation pierced by one of the screws.

ok cool, i got a new dimmer switch, but instead of writing on the terminals on the back, its got symbols.

its got live
its got an "s"

and its got an arrow with a line going through it.

which one is the negative, and which one is the earth ?

im guessing, as its a plastic body, and a plasticy silver switch, that it doesnt need to be earthed.

Is this a 'touch' dimmer with a metalic pad?
I get a tingle from mine, and been OK for 7 or 8 years

thats all well and good til your operating system crashes.

you will hear voices thoughout your house in a bill gates style voice.

" your bathroom has performed an illegal operation, your bathroom will now terminate "

and in true windows XP style,
this will happen many times a day, despite numerous house updates, and at the most inconvinent times.
