Well if it's running fine and not smoking and not using to much oil and the oil is not milky then I wouldn't worry just ride and enjoy!!!!

Ok maybe I've had a bad day but I'm wondering people can sit down behind a key boeard and automatically can be 100% know the garage is trying to rip paws off.

There gave been some very good posts but it looks like a few people are trying to jump on the bad wagon of "Aha... another one being ripped off" .

Some already is calling whoever the garage is a ****** . Quantify not burning too much oil please. Isn't the internet great for keyboard know-alls and those who the sound of keyboard clicking away is like music.

FFS some people need to get a grip . That's all.

Cheers
Ben

If you're referring to me, then you'll note I said if paws gets a second opinion which shows that the mechanic is trying to rip her off then the original mechanic is a ****** and should be named and shamed.

Sounds like rubbish to me, but what do I know, I've only been designing and developing engines (including pistons/rings) for, what, 25yrs.

Like the others say, if it sounds OK and runs OK and oil consumption's OK and blowby's OK, then chances are it's a duck, oops sorry, it's OK.

IF it really is down on compression it's far more likely to be valves. Remember a compression check must be done hot and with the throttle held wide open (preferably disable the ignition).

Under normal conditions and given regular oil changes, the rings should be fine for well over 100k miles, and pistons more than that.

Put it this way, he wouldn't be getting any of my money just yet.....................

MB----Cheers for that.I did'nt know a compression test had to be done hot with the throttles open.It pays to look and learn by reading posts on here.

Has he done a leakdown test? As a compression test will tell you very little apart from somethings wrong
