Download some HDD diagnostic tools and try them... should help you decide.

Like zobo says, try a virus scanner first, if you've caught something nasty that might cause the problems you've seen.
I like these folks and they have a free online tool thing that might do what you need:

Try the the antivirus checks first, I can talk you thru the rest. symantec's online scanner or pandas

Its unlikely to be a virus if you have formatted the drive and that would wipe them out anyway. If you were running up to date anti-virus software before formatting this would back up my theory. If you know the manufacturer of your hard drive they probably do their own diagnostics software or try www.download.com for various free third party software downloads. I suspect a new drive will solve your problem at £30 for an 80Gb drive its not too drastic anyway
