I guessed at the 48mm and I just checked, right. It would be really thirsty with race cans, BMC filter and larger mains methinks.

They have the same main jets as my SV

Edit: Possibly.

That was one of the possibilities for my next move, but I'd worry about the tank range if you're touring on it.

I had a 2000 model.

http://www.bikepics.com/members/thei...tor/00vtr1000/

About 16k, art race cans with standard, lower fairing, Db Screen for £1900. Winter bargain that was.

As for my thoughts on it. It certainly is not the sharpest tool in the box, it does actually weigh quite a bit (more than I first thought) and the handling is a little slow coming from an sv650/ninja background but that is something you coulod be acclimatised to. Got roughly 100-110 miles from the small tank. Roughly about 42mpg on the commute. Never got to hammer it about on dry tarmac so I dare say that figure would take a beating when the sun comes out.

Suspension was fine for my light frame but chasing anyone else and I dare say it would flop about. Common mod is to fit on a fireblade front end.

CCT is their weakness. If it's done 20k and it hasn't had them replaced, get them done.

Lot of bike for the money. I liked my last one and would like another. Nicer alternative than the SV1000 if you ask me. The thou' just looks like the 650, a budget bike and that doesn't appeal. Not many litre twins about so I would say for the money, they are the best.

Think of "Falco" but with reliability.....

Seriously, I do keep thinking about one as a touring bike, it's just if you ride them hard 75 miles to a tank isn't unusual

I'm not sure if there is another tank that would fit, but other than that (and the fact it's carb'ed not EFI) I may have picked one up by now. Pretty good engine, like has been said before, front end swap with an early blade makes a lot of difference.

But, it is a 10 year old design... so looks a bit "old hat" compared to modern bikes.

Had a '98 for 3yr and 36,000m. Would scoosh my mates 600's on the road most of the time if they were not banging off their limiters. Not great on track standard and 70 odd miles to a tank. Sits unstressed at 130mph, feels like 80mph.Saw 165mph. Wanted to go big mile touring two up, and it does not, so got rid. Poor tank range and pillion.

V-twin thin. Eats tyres and chains if you are "unsympathetic"

Great bottom and mid-range torque, proper oomph.Smooooth power delivery everywhere.

Very, very easy to wheelie off the power(so check for oval head bearings) Gorgeous sounds with pipes and filter (needs re jetted with filter, but the sound of those massive carbs sucking will give you shivers)

100% reliable.

Later models had gone from 17l tank to 19l , new weird clocks and higher clip-ons.

A lot of bike for feck all money now. Absolute bargain. "A V-twin VFR" but lacking in overall quality compared to that bike.

If it was my only bike and I had to use it most of the time I would plump for VTR over TL/SV/ Falco....(flame-retardent suit on)

.....but I am biased!

Very much an understated machine which was put in the shade by the introduction of the SP's. But buy at the right price and spend not too much to sort the suspension and you have a great bike in my mind.

Slightly limited ground clearance if you are thinking of getting too feisty in the curvy stuff. However you will find them difficult to beat as a top drawer wheelie machine that can keep the front end airborne for as long as you dare!

i seriously considered a firestorm but at low 30's mpg it just wasn't practical and a friend of mine had a head gasket go on one so i just stuck with the sv.
