Can you translate this oriental tattoo?

Well it's not Kanji.
The word for Vengeance in Kanji is FUKUSHU and that is 4 symbols long.
It does appear to be chinese than japanese, but I don't know chinese as well as Japanese.
I have 4 Kanji words tattooed on me, I did a lot of research before I got them, sounds like your mate was a bit silly TBH.

According to a Taiwanese guy at work it is Japanese and means "love"
