Must say I had the same paranoia on the M1 roadwork section J10 to 6A (IIRC) because it looks a bit like the sets of cameras cover the other side of the road. Kept thinking maybe the opposite carriageway set might be able to get me so I didn't risk it.

The roadworks on the M4 between London and Reading (which seem to have been there for as long as eternity it's self) have those camera's and I have also noticed that they have them pointing in both directions.

I may/may not be 100% correct here but....
If i remember rightly, most of the manufacturers of the SPECS kit have yet to get Home Office approval for the kit to be used in a rearfacing role. Might be wrong, will check at work when im back off holiday Colin |

There's a 26mile (yes 26 mile) stretch of average speed cameras on the A77 from Ayr down to Girvan. They don't seem to catch the bikes, as my mate commutes down there every two days, and he's not been nabbed yet by the specs... And the A77 is mostly single carraigeway with a 60mph limit!!! There's only a few stretches of duel carraigeways on it.. no motorways.. You can imagine the chaos it causes if you get stuck behind a bus or lorry doing 40mph, the road is twisty, then you come across a good long straight to get past. You put your foot down to pass the slow vehicle, and the next thing you know you've just averaged over 68mph and recieved an NIP through the post. People down that neck of the woods are now all the back roads because it's far quicker and safer than the main road... thus avoiding the A77 like the plague now.
The spec cameras read the tax disc on the vehicle then match the number plate on the vehicle on the front. They scan the tax disc bar code then verify the tax details with the front no. plate. Hide your tax disc on the car/truck as most Irish lorry drivers too and you're OK!!! No showing a tax disc in the correct place in the vehicle (left hand side of window)and the specs can't read the vehicle as it passes. Not displaying the tax disc in the correct place also flags the no.plate to police cars to do a stop check on you. Spec camera websites don't want you knowing this info - they want you to believe they read the number plates.. I asked a traffic officer one day I got stopped for a tacho check.. Spec cameras are not type approved to catch folk from the rear yet, so it's illegal for the authorites to nick you using a spec camera rear facing. Last edited by jimmy4237; 26-05-07 at 10:11 PM. |

If they are facing towards you, no they can't get you and as far as I know most (all?) speed cameras aren't approved to cover both sides of the road with the same device.
As for the cameras when they've been swivelled around - well, if you want to speed past a camera that's on your side of the road and pointing at your numberplate the choice is yours. They are adapting them (or have already done so) to get the front and back of all vehicles due to bikes slipping though the net and forgetful car drivers accidentally leaving mud on their front plates. I wouldn't go through any of them, even the forward facing specs, over the limit - is it worth it to save yourself 60 seconds or so? |
