Competition for RM would be fine, just as long as any competitors had to deliver the same service everywhere with no cherry picking only the profitable bits.Id like to see TNT or DHL deliver letters to remote Scottish Islands for 39p

I could whinge onto my workplace about it , but I kinda see their point of view. In the usual case , I supply a service & they pay me... Im not longer supplying that service so then I can see why they dont want to pay me lol. Royal mails fault , not neccesarily theirs.

On saying that , I used to work for royal mail up Doxford park in Sunderland. Whilst it was alright there, theres a permanent feeling of something is not right about the place.

In my opinion , the national Postal Service should be governmental... same with the Public transport. introducing private companys running critical jobs like this just opens a can of worms

-edit-

In fairness to competition, The Deutch Mail group has been trying to get their mits into our national mailing system for years.. all be it denied by Royal mail. Its a shame cos there pretty good aswell offshoot wise like Omega etc. Unlike Parcel force , which as just as pants as Royal mail is.

Now, seeing as how our competitiors like TNT, UKMail etc. can't actually be arsed delivering anywhere they dont get a huge profit doing so (ie. rural) - they can offload stuff like that in our depots, and we are obliged to deliver all this by law at a loss. And it's them that generate a lot of the junk mail.

The reason you've not been getting real items of mail is partly because RM asked the public/businesses not to put unessential mail into the system during the strikes.

So go on, use a courier. They're soooo much better.

Securicor Omega no longer exists it was bought out by DHL about 3 years ago for about £700 million

Completely agree about parcel force being rubbish, they managed to lose an SV engine i had bought, then when they found it a week later they delivered it to the wrong house!

Damn , hadnt heard about Omega being bought out.

Been a while since I worked at Royal mail I guess.. we used to get these "in house" magazines , with articles about such potential companys who would like to be where Royal Mail is.

I have heard news (last thing 2night, bbc at the very end of newsnight) that an agreement has been made with the union directors and royal mail, but first has to be agreed on by the members, the earliest this can happen is monday morning, here's hoping thats an end to this. But I agree something needs to be changed as the company just gets worse, not better, mail never arrives on time, never mind during a strike.

I have to pickup on this point, as I live in a rural area.

Try shipping something by courier to me, it doesn't work. It'll get as far as their nearest "branch office" then I get something delivered by the RM postie (who actually lives over the road) saying I have to go pick it up. So unless I know what's in the post before I go, I generally don't bother picking it up, and it can go back to the sender.

The last thing that happened with was the Fon modem I ordered a while back. I think that took 3 months to get to me. Free postage, and the courier wants me to drive 15miles to go pick it up. Err, no.

If the staff at RM are getting a bum deal, let them take a stand! Do I care if post arrives a little late? Nope.
