Well- I've just fitted the new unit- Electrex RR85. It's a new shape (hexagonal heatsink with cables poking out of the top- or bottom, compared to the screw holes).

Tricky thing is, the fairing is flush against the cables and doesn't sit quite right now (creaks when I sit on the bike- didn't do that before, despite my belly). It's bolted on and the bike works, but the fairing is slightly bent out of shape.

The slip it came with said is for SV650 & includes type X (ie 1999 curvy- mine)- and assuming there's nowt different in the subframe/rear fairing on a nekkid and a faired bike.

I can't fit with the wires poking down, as the fairing won't sit right at all then, so I guess I'll just have to see over the next couple of days and have another look on the weekend.

Anyone had this problem?

Matt
The SV manual has a circuit of the rectifier unit, it shows three SCR's(Silicon Controlled Rectifier) that short the alternator windings if the voltage gets too high. If the lights are off then these SCR's will be switched on for a longer time and will get hotter.
How hot are these units getting? looking at the spec. for some of these diodes and SCRs are max case temperatures of 150C.

One bike manufacturer may not be any better than the other because they may all be using the same manufacturer for there electrical parts and putting there own badge on it.

I've just spoken to Electrex- the manufacturer who said that they've had another call re fitting issues- as they've updated the design for more heavy duty use where airflow is an issue.

I'm going to send in a photo to them so he can have a look at it- as he's ordering in some plates to aid fitting of the units. Very helpful, I must say.

Any updates?

Has the bike been laid up all this time?

Waiting for the fitting plate at the mo- will let you know.

I'm still riding- it's just that the fairing's a bit bent at the mo- the bike's usable, but she does creak a little when I sit on her (!).

Got the fitting plate- it's fairly substantial! Put it all on (it came with all bolts too- I wasn't expecting that..!)- however, it's still sticking into the fairing- and worse, as it's the point of the plug- so there's a bit of cracking of the paintwork (not a major disaster- there are several tatty bits of paint on the old dear!).

There are a few holes in the plate though- so re-orientation will occur tonight. I would have done this yesterday, but after 4 hours of working on the bike on Saturday, I just wanted to get on an ride the thing!
