Its the front cam chain tensioner that has failed, the shop will be replacing both front and rear and checking to make sure the chain hasn't jumped a tooth. As soon as i heard the noise i hit the kill switch so hopefully the timing should still be ok.

Just to clarify, the cam chain noise heard beforehand was very very quiet, if i knew it would fail without any notice i would of had it fixed.

I must admit this has put me off the sv a little

Had a look at a kwak z750 the other day, 04 plate, fell in love

Hmmmmm, generally you'll find all bikes have issues, these can be broken down into several types, known model specific, abuse, high mileage/wear or faulty componant.

the wonderful thing about the first is they can be regularly checked and in the case of the cam chain tensioners re-set easily ( or at time of checking found to need replacement), the service schedule prosumes a great deal on useage, it's far more a guide than a bible, as a general rule anything should be investigated when you first become aware of it to determine if it is just something to keep an eye on or not, Oh I'm as bad as the next guy on things like that and actually fixing them, but I will confirm it's a minor problem first and schedule time to fix it accordingly if it allows.

Some times a cam chain issue can be annoying and be just a case of half an hour spend re-setting it or progess to a complete engine replacement, you seem to have caught it somewhere inbetween,I'm glad in your case it seems to be a relatively cheap fix.

Still it's all experiance, hopefully the replacements will negate future problems, but I'd either be replacing with manual adjusters ( needing regular adjusting anyway) or making a point to re-set the automatic (OEM) ones each service to avoid anything like it in the future.

Cheers Mark.

Mark,

Thanks for the advice mate, i must admit if i was able to strip the engine myself i would have done it almost straight away (when the noise first reared its head). Unfortunately im limited to basic servicing as my knowledge is limited.

Like you say though its all about learning.

In the meantime i will just have to grin and bear it, although looking at the lovely blue sky is a tad frustrating. I am planning a few days in Wales next month so the bike and i can mend our troubled relationship

PS My mate at the shop said the spring was rusty and this was partly why the cam chain tensioner failed
