If you do a search there has been a few similar threads in people asking the same questions - i.e. I thought it was an oil level light, or whats the point in the light coming on if the damage has already been done...
Basically from what I know, its would be very difficult to put an oil LEVEL sensor in a bike engine due to the amount of oil being splashed about by various components and atomised under pressure, and get an accurate reading. The red light which illuminated is an oil pressure light, which would normally indicate that the pressure has dropped to a level which the oil is no longer being pressurised in the engine - could be low oil, could be a knackered oil pump. To be honest Faisal, and I must admit that I have mixed feelings about this, as it was my bike that I sold to you - I'm very surprised that you didnt check the oil level for 2k miles. Whether the bike drinks oil or not (I didn'f find that it did BTW, but I was doing pretty low mileage and replacing the oil regularly) is irrelevant - it should be one of your regular checks. For the amount of time it takes to do, its not worth not doing to be safe. Hope you get it sorted. BB. |

I know sv spares said they had a pointy engine for sale but that was a few weeks back, your gonna have to look around.
To check the oil on a SV isn't very hard you can do it yourself, just stand the bike upright and the oil level will show in the window on the off side of the bike. Before you say you can't I'm a short ****. I haven't seen anything in any the manules I own saying there is an oil indicator light, thats why there is the window for checking the oil level. I do wonder what state the rest of the bike is in, casue if you haven't checked anything for 2000 miles.......oh dear ![]() |

Have you actually looked to see if there's any oil in the thing?

Its an oil pressure indicator, have been riding the bike with this on? If so big opps. the handbook clear states that there is a problem if thats on, ie low oil pressure. Two questions one why didn't you read handbook, second why not ask one of us?

it serves 3 things, oil pressure, water coolant level and the FI system, the handbook explains it more less.
Let us know how you get on with your bike, hopefully its nothing too bad and all will be well. Which bike shop did you take it too? |

By aprilia you mean one of the strokers? The oil level in those works totally differently.
In a 4 stroke engine, the level of oil in the sump changes massively when the engine is running, and also on any sensor you find it will detect the oil mist in the crankcase, and show oil there where there is none.

Make sure you keep on top of them with regard to costs. If you can, try to agree a cost for diagnosis of the fault, then for any repairs which might be needed. Otherwise you may find that the costs can spiral out of control, and you may have been best buying a 2nd hand engine in the first place.
