Check the oil, does the oil stink of fuel?

Im not sure to be honest. I can check in the morning. So are you thinking that they may have drawn fuel into the oil or vice versa when setting up the carbs? Would that explain the engine running so poorly?

What i first thought was oil/petrol mixture may be petrol mixed with the soot from the inside of the exhaust. Definitely smells of petrol and is black but very thin consistency.

Ah ok. It's worth a check. Also check the oil level. If levels gone up significantly that indicates fuel in oil.

What colour is smoke and what does it smell like?

They did!!! Not sure which hose it was but... when i was investigating earlier a hose from the airbox to the front of the engine was disconnected from where it should obviously be fitted.. shoddy work by any standard

Like i mentioned earlier i redid the word that they should have done... ie. connect hoses and airbox properly and fasten tank down! There was no change as far as I could tell. If they had forgotted to do this, would that cause fuel mix with oil? If so, surely thats something they would have to sort out for me???

Probably a breather. Does it pick up at higher revs with more throttle as if it's running very lean or just not have it at all?

Well I've not tried to rev it above 5k or so as its sounded sickly and noisy. Something I should mention is that as I was about to turn into the drive on the way back from the garage the engine was racing a bit to the extent that i had to kill it for fear of shooting off uncontrolably and roll in under my own steam.
