I was lucky enough to catch them last September in Naarvik, Norway.

It was a bit early in the year and they weren't as impressive as they get, but we were still in awe of them. The locals looked at us like we were mad, stood outside the hotel gawping up at the sky.

The problem with Norway is how expensuive it is...it was costing over £8 for a vodka + coke, £7 for a pint of lager. eeek. Glad the company was paying!

BUT - get it done...Norway has awesome scenery.

I don't drink alochol at all so no probs with buying drink..! How expensive is other things like food?

I popped into the travel agents yesterday and found a really good deal (well..I think its good anyway?) for 4 days. It'l cost me £800 (ouch) which includes: flights, pick up and drop off from hotel/hotel, equipment (clothes), full-board hotel, sledghing, snow shoeing, snowmobiles, reindeer ride (& lessons on how to catch one with a lasso..yeehaw!), being pulled on sledges with the huskies (no idea of the offical title), 2 trips to see the northern lights with a tour guide, one in norway and one in finland)

Next flight is 17th January. a week after my birthday...Im so very tempted.....

I am really tempted also..... just had a look at the icelandic tourist board web. Hotels are between 50USD and 170 USD per night.

The Dollar to pound rate is not great at 1.43 to the pound but its still quite cheap

I think that's a guide though and IIRC the amount of Kronur you get to the pound at the moment is pretty high compared to recent times. So long as they haven't put their prices up just pay in Kronur, not USD.

When we went we did have to be careful about what food and drink we bought as the prices were like eating in nice places in London all the time. About £13 for a pint and a glass of wine so needless to say we just had the one!

If anyone's thinking of going to Iceland just go, it's tremendous.

I've just got home from flying kids to see Santa in Lapland, at 36000 feet the Northern Lights were spectacular tonight starting like a plume of smoke to the south of us and according to my colleague on the right side of the aircraft they were spiraling up to the north. It made a good day at work into an excellent day at work.
