Don't believe anything about salaries you may read.

we pay our junior operation staff about £18k, application support engineers about £25-30k, senior engineers with 20+ years about £40k. It is no wonder we have a high turnover of young graduates on 20k stay about 2 years and sod off for the bright lights and big bucks elsewhere.

but HR tell us we are paying average, yes average for a grotty midlands town but not when the big cities/bucks are only a short commute away

Utter horse****. The average starting salary for an IT graduate (from a 3 year full time BSc degree) in the UK last year was £21.5K, waaaaay beyond that of even the "average" graduate starting salary of £24.5K(across all disciplines- so factor in all the poor saps with media studies/engish degrees). A lot depends on whether or not you're prepared to live in London. As Daimo says, you'll get a lot more as a junior in London than you will with experience out in the sticks.

The rather dodgy £30K statistic is based on the "average salary of an IT professional", of which you'll allegedly be one. The reality is, the high earners' salaries skew it so the "average" (mean) looks far higher, just like the majority (mode) of people in the UK never get to sniff the average UK male wage of £27,000.

I've worked in IT since I was 19 (so that's 12 years now) and I have zero qualifications to do so. I'm now employed as a senior consultant, which means I do business analysis, systems analysis and selection consultancy, infrastructure architecting, project management, IT strategy development etc.

I've done most things in IT including software development, testing, hardware and software support at all levels, team leading and management, sales, contracting, project management, you name it.

I'm lucky, that I have the right kind of brain that I don't need to know much about anything to be able to learn it quickly, and once learned, it sticks fast.

That probably doesn't help much, to be honest. Oh well.
