Dead chuffed with both for the price. Yeah, it probably ruins the looks a little, but when I'll be using the topbox I'd be using a massive tailpack and tankbag anyway if I didn't have the topbox and they hardly enhance the looks.
Personally I think a topbox looks neater than soft luggage/tank bags, and my main reason was security, I know it can still be foiled but can leave stuff in it if you have to.

I think the best value and biggest I'd put on an SV is this

And I have to agree with the above re the SW Motech adapator bracket. Its a very tidy solution

Plus you don't have hassle of strapping it all on the bike and worrying while riding along that it's all still there.

Right... been looking into all this but I'm none to bright so need to clarify some stuff...

The way I see it comes essentially in three parts, the box, a plate to attach it to, and the bracket set to attach the plate too. These appear to need to be bought separately, but bundles are out there on ebay.

Does the bracket set require any drilling etc?
How much should I expect to pay for a 2 helmet (45l?) setup with all three bits? (Ball park figs)

I'm not exactly a dab hand with fitting stuff and fitting my frame sliders (when they arrive) will be my first attempt at anything with this bike.

i just got the set up of of ebay and you don't need to worry about sourcing all the correct bit's and fitting's it's all there ready to go and you'll need to take the tail unit of to fit it if it's anything like the curvy rack but it's fairly straightforward to fit.

Basically yes, you've got it right, most arrangements are brackets to suit the bike, plate to suit the box, and the box.

Depending on the bike you'll likely get either purpopse made brackets for it, which should be simple bolt-on jobbies, or possibly some sort of universal bracketry which is usually not as neat.

Givi boxes usually hold their value quite well on ebay, if you're lucky you'll find a cheap one but they are rare unless really tatty. I think you can just get 2 helmets in an E45 size, but not a smaller one (owners may confirm or correct this). Expect to pay at least half new prices for decent ones. I ended up with a new E52 because I was running out of time before a holiday and got tired of waiting for a "bargain", £150 new local shop/pick-up in person versus £100+p&p unseen off ebay?

Does it look stupid - well yes, but then i think walking round carrying a helmet in bike gear during summer is also a pain. you can always just unclip it when no needed.

EDIT - you can get some cheap universal fitting kits but I'd still be tempted to go with a bespoke one. There aren't many about second hand for the SV unfortunatly as its not a popular option. Soft luggage will be much cheaper, but for about £150 you can get a box with the correct fitting kit...

I was going to get one of the kits above as they do a silver topb box to match me bike colour. Fortunately I was lucky enough to get them separately second hand. Keep scouring Ebay if you want to reduce the price a little, as there have been a couple of monorack kits and SW Motech racks on there recently which have sold for much less than £50 and there are always topboxes available.

All the advice above is spot on, it really depends on how desperate you are to get something. I paid over £100 for my sw-motech rack from www.motorbikesandparts.co.uk (they give discount for repeat purchases), however there was one on eBay just before Christmas that went for about £60 IIRC. My Givi soft luggage was around £130 brand new, however I got mine off eBay for £65 (it had only been used once!).

I noticed last week that Hein Gericke were selling the Givi arms for the SV650 on their eBay shop, however can't seem to find the shop anymore.

I wanted something that could quickly change from having no noticeable luggage rack, to taking my laptop/work gear, to full on large hard luggage for weekends away etc very quickly - that's why I went for the sw-motech.

Again, if you have the time, then eBay etc is the best option, if you need something quickly, you might have to bite the bullet.

Where are you based? Most of the Pannier frames are bolt on with no drilling so as long as you are ok with a spanner and socket set, you should be ok.
