What i didn't know is that you have to SORN them every twelve months. A bit of a drag when your bikes are permanently in pieces
How'd they successfully fine him for a scrapped bike? I've a bit worried about this to be honest I scrapped a car but didn't have a logbook so just sent them a letter notifying them I'd scrapped it, I've not heard from them yet.

You thought correct.

You're not going to get a letter off the DVLA for one day late, don't worry.

I'm sat reading it, and thats what it says
It _used_ to be law that you had X days after tax expired before you were prosecuted. AFAIK that was changed several years ago and you need to get taxed before the old one runs out now.
Can't definitively quote anything atm, but the exact law is bound to be on the DVLA or tax website somewhere.

there is definately no grace period, there is no 14 day allowance, the 5 days between taxing the bike online and the arrival of the disc, you cannot ride the bike. The offence is failure to display a valid tax disc not failure to have one or failure to sorn. If the bike is even parked on the public highway it needs a valid tax disc DISPLAYED. go to the post office with the bit of the v5 you have and they will give you a disc there and then.

Of course the likelyhood of getting caught may be slim, but be under no misconception as to whether it is legal or not.

From the back of my tax disk renewal reminder

Quote:
WARNING
Your vehicle must be either taxed or declared off road by making a SORN

If you intend to tax your vehicle, do so before your current disc or SORN runs out. If you apply on line or over the phone in the last few days of the month you will not be committing an offense if you do not display a tax disc for the first five working days of the next month. This is a new law which gives time for the new tax disc to arrive in the post. This new law only applies if you made your application for a new disc before the current one or the SORN ran out.
However we accept that it is not always possible to tax your vehicle on time. For example, you may be waiting for insurance or getting an MOT for your vehicle. By law you as the registered keeper will be not committing an offense if you tax your vehicle or make a SORN within 14 days of the date your current disc runs out. You must keep your vehicle off road during this time as you will be commiting an offense if it is used or parked on the road.

would anybody like to have the info about the SORN while I am here?
